Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has fired his deputy Joice Mujuru and seven other cabinet ministers loyal to her.

A statement issued by the president's chief secretary says Mujuru's conduct had been "inconsistent with the expected standard."

Mujuru's dismissal comes just days after she was eliminated from the ruling party's central committee on the allegations that she was plotting to assassinate¹ Mugabe.

But she has repeatedly denied the charge.

Mujuru had been considered one of the strongest candidates to succeed Mugabe, who has been in power since Zimbabwe's independence in 1980.
