Chinanews, Hangzhou, Dec. 11 – Last Saturday, two businessmen from Wenzhou signed an agreement with local government in the United Arab Emirates on the purchase of some pieces of land in UAE. The land, which covers a total area of 800,000 square meters, will be used for developing real estate projects. It is expected that more businesspeople from Wenzhou will swarm1 into UAE in future vying2 with their foreign counterparts in trying to take a share in local property market, the Hangzhou-based Dushikuaibao reported.

 

In the agreement signed this time, both the two projects are located in Ras al-Khaimah in the northern part of UAE. One project, the Dana Island, is a man-made island being built by reclaiming3 land from the sea. The land covers a total area of 500,000 square meters and is bought by Zhang Jinyun, chairman of the Canadian Wenzhou Businesspeople's Chamber4 of Commerce. He plans to build some villas5 and apartments on the island. The other project is a piece of land bought by Wenzhou housing developer Zhou Jianzhi. The land covers an area of 300,000 square meters and Zhou has bought the land's permanent ownership right, hoping to build some houses for vacation use.

 

Dana Island consists of five islets and Zhang has bought three of them. He can develop them at his discretion6 and land reclamation7 work will start in August next year and will be finished by 2009. Once the land reclamation work is completed, Zhou can start to build houses on the island. The lot bought by Zhou can be used right after local construction bureau has approved the project development feasibility report. The two businessmen have developed some housing projects in China and they also have invested in the property market in some other foreign countries. So they had had rich experiences in property market before making investment in UAE, said executive president of Asia Business TV.

 

Before making the deal, Zhang invited nine other businesspeople, who were also from Wenzhou, to go with him in a commercial inspection8 to UAE. During the inspection, one of the businessmen, Zheng Kelong, planned to develop some housing project in Maji'an Island, which is also a man-made island. He has already signed a letter of intent with local government for the development of a plot with an area of 40,000 square meters.

 

Another Wenzhou businessman, Hu Mingliang, formerly9 worked in the IT sector10 in Shenzhen. Seeing that so many millionaires had gathered in UAE, he applied11 to local government for the purchase of a piece of land with an area of 130,000 square meters, where he wanted to build a yacht manufacturing plant.
