Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 4 – “In 2007, Chinese economy has maintained a fast growing momentum1. Economic structure has been streamlined and economic efficiency further improved. Chinese people's living standards have also been raised. It is expected that Chinese economy might keep a double-digit growth rate this year and touch the highest level in 12 years, as a result of the industrialization and urbanization process and of Chinese efforts to promote a market-oriented economy,” said Yao Jingyuan, chief economist2 at the National Statistics Bureau, last Saturday.

 

He made the statement while attending the 2008 China Iron and Steel Industry Forum3 held in Shanghai recently, the Shanghai Securities Journal reported.

 

In recent years, Chinese economy has progressed soundly. Since 2003, the economy has always maintained a double-digit growth and such economic growth rate is more than twice the average growth level in the world. With the economic structure being more streamlined, the tertiary industry has contributed more to the economy; Chinese efforts in energy conservation and emission4 reduction have proved effective; the energy consumption in per capita GDP has further reduced. Fiscal5 revenues and corporate6 earnings7 have both increased rapidly. Earnings have also increased both in means of subsistence and production, in heavy industry and light industry. Chinese people's living standards have also been raised this year. The per capita income made by urbanites and farmers has both increased substantially and the unemployment rate has dropped to the lowest point since 2003. These are some of the achievements made in Chinese economy in 2007, Yao said.

 

In 2007, price hike has emerged as a major problem in economic development. According to Yao, it is a structural8 problem. While the prices of houses, medical services, cigarettes and liquors have all climbed, the prices of clothes, transportation and telecommunication9 services, and goods in the science, education, culture and healthcare have declined by 0.5%. Of all goods that have witnessed a price hike, the price of foods has risen by 17.6 and the price of commodities other than foods by merely 1.1%. Food price has contributed to 87% of the CPI hike in 2007.

 

On the other hand, it should be noted10 that price rise does not bring only negative effects. The price rise in agricultural goods, for example, has raised farmers' income. So every coin has two sides, he said.
