China's gold output might exceed South Africa by 2010

Chinanews, Beijing, Dec.4 – China's gold output has maintained its fast growing momentum1 in recent years. It is expected that China's gold output might exceed that of the United States in 2007, to become the world's second largest gold producer. In the next three years, China's gold output might exceed South Africa, which will make China become the world's first gold producer.

 

The statement was made by Hou Huimin, deputy director of the China Gold Association, in an interview given to reporters from the China Business News last Saturday.

 

In recent years, gold output in China has increased at an annual rate of 20 tons per year. In 2006, China ranked third in world gold output, falling behind the United States by merely 4.6 tons. It is expected that China's gold output might reach 260 tons this year, which would make China become the second largest gold producer in the world, only next to South Africa. By 2010, annual gold output in China will hit 300 tons. By then, its gold output will surpass that of South Africa and turn China into the world's largest gold producer, Hou said.
