Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 3 – China might launch Chang'e backup satellite in 2009, said Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist for China's moon probe project and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences last Saturday, Laodong Daily reported.
By then, related technologies will be more mature. In sending the backup satellite, China will not need to do orbit transfer. Instead, the backup satellite will be sent directly into the moon orbit.
China has made two satellites for its moon probe project, Chang'e 1 having been used as the formal satellite and the other one to be used as the backup satellite. Since the launching of Chang'e 1 was very successful, the backup satellite can now be used to carry out some other missions. This will mean that China can do more space exploration work than previously1 planned, said Ouyang Ziyuan.
“According to our schedule, we might launch the backup satellite in 2009,” he said.
China has collected many useful data through Chang'e 1. With its successful launch, China also has gained lots of experiences that will be beneficial to China's satellite launch work in future, the scientist said.
