Foreign investors focus on corporate governance in buying Chinese firms

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 20 – A recent survey shows that when buying a Chinese company, some foreign investors1 would like to offer a 28.5% of premium2 to buy one that has good managing capability3, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

 

The survey was done by CPA Australia Hong Kong branch and Hong Kong Baptist University's Corporate4 Governance and Financial Policy Research Center. The conclusion was drawn5 after the two research bodies issued questionnaires to 664 international investors.

 

Information shows that malpractice of top managers, inside trading and lack of commercial morality have become the three major problems that Chinese companies face. Therefore in making investment decisions, a company's managing ability is the most important criterion for many international investors.

 

In the survey, 55% of the respondents say that in their decision on investing in a company both the company's managing capability and its financial strength are important, while 37% of the respondents say the former is even more important than the latter. In addition, many respondents point out that the three factors that would affect a company's managing ability are its regulation enforcement ability, information disclosure status and how well it can protect shareholders6' interests.
