The information was released by a medical expert at the 2007 China Medical Seminar on Organ Transplant. The seminar was held in Guangzhou over the weekend, the Nanfang Metropolitan2 News reported.
The contents that are to be discussed will include issues like how to define brain death, how to implement3 the organ donation plan for patients suffering from brain death, how to properly manage the donated organs and how to set up a scheme to compensate4 donors5, etc, the expert told this reporter.
In China, there is currently a limited number of organs that come from brain-death patients. Many organ transplant surgeries are done with living organs. Before 2003, living organs transplants accounted for only 1% of the total number of kidney transplants. Last year, however, the proportion already rose to more than 10%. Medical experts predict that there will be 2,000 living kidney transplant surgeries this year. As more and more living organs transplants are being carried out in China, the country needs to improve related medical technologies and publicize regulations and ethical6 rules on living organs transplants.
