China to invest 14 mln yuan on Qomolangma wetlands protection

Chinanews, Lhasa, November 9 – The State Council of China has approved the plan of investing 14 million yuan on the restoration of the wetlands in the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve, and on setting up supportive ecological1 and zoological monitoring facilities.
The project will be kicked off in 2008, and it will be completed in one year. Nearly 6,000 hectares of wetlands will be closed for recovery, and 4,400-odd hectares will be restored.
The Qomolangma Nature Reserve is located on the Sino-Nepalese border, covering 33,000 sq km. Being the most bio-diversified nature reserve in Tibet, it was included in the UNESCO MAB Project in 2004.
According to current statistics, there are 2,300-odd higher plant species and 270 animal species. Traces of almost all rare animals like the snow leopard2 and panther can be found here, too.
Mountainous wetlands are very important to the world's ecoenvironment, as it preserves bio-diversity and supplies oxygen, not to mention that they can also be a great source of underground water.
Tibet is known for its rich wetland resources. It has 38 nature reserves, whose total acreage covers 30% of its territory.
