China faces a severe situation in fight against desertification

Chinanews, Chengdu, Nov. 3 – In some parts of China, the efforts to fight against desertification have proved fruitful. However, in general, China has met a worsening situation in desertification control problem. It might take the hard work of several generations to deal with the problem, said An Chengxin, chairman of China Foundation of Desertification Control, in Chengdu on Thursday.

 

As one of the countries seriously affected1 by desertification, China's desertified land already accounts for 27.3% of the national territory. Moreover, the area of desertified land is still increasing by 2, 000 square kilometers every year. About 400 million people are affected by desertification and it causes 54 billion yuan of direct economic loss and 288.9 billion yuan of indirect economic loss every year.

 

There is tough work ahead and a long way to go for China to fight against desertification. The public should give their concern and support to the cause. We should start to do the hard work from our generation and the work should be carried on by our offsprings. With our hard efforts, we believe that desertification problem can be resolved finally, An said.
