China plans to draw gene maps for 99 people

Chinanews, Shanghai, Oct 18 - The Beijing Genomics Institute-Shenzhen (BGI-SZ), which successfully drew the first genome sequence for a Chinese, declared in Shenzhen on Monday that it planned to draw the genome sequence for another 99 Chinese people, to gather the genome information from 99 Chinese volunteers, the Shanghai Evening Post reported.

 

Although the research institute completed the first genome sequencing for Chinese, the gene1 information gathered so far is still not rich enough to support related research about diseases. In order to obtain more information, the Shenzhen institute now plans to draw the genome maps for another 99 Chinese people.

 

In choosing the appropriate volunteers, the Shenzhen research institute will try to make sure that the volunteers can display the features of a typical Chinese. It will also try to make sure that people from the south region and from the north, the Han majority and the ethnic2 minorities can all take up a certain proportion in the volunteer group, said a person in charge of the project.

 

Normally, it takes at least 5 million yuan to finish the genome sequencing of a person. In order to complete this project, the Shenzhen genomics institute hopes that people in society can set up a fund to sponsor the project.
