Chinanews, Xi’an, October 11 – Archeologists have found carbonized peanuts in Yangting Tomb, the tomb of the Jingdi Emperor of the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC – AD 24).

 

It is common for descendents of wealthy ancient Chinese to put food grains in their deceased forbears’ tombs (so that the latter could have enough to eat in the nether1 world), but peanuts were considered to be imported to China in the 1500s from South America.

 

The peanuts were found in the storehouse of the tomb, mixed with several kinds of other grains, including wheat and millet2.

 

The Yangling Tomb is located in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province, including 193 pits. Now 20 of them have been excavated3, with 2 of them having storehouses.
