Since China has ever built the country's first satellite launching center in Jiuquan in 1958, the current three satellite launching centers have accomplished3 more than 100 launching tasks successfully. During these launching tasks, the three centers have sent more than 100 satellites and six manned spaceships into space.
As the country's earliest satellite launching center, Jiuquan satellite launching center has created many records in China's launching history. In November 1960, it launched the first domestic ground-to-ground missile. In April 1970, it successfully sent Dongfanghong 1, the country's first man-made satellite, into space. In November 1975, it put China's first retrievable satellite into the orbit. In October 2003, it sent the first manned space shuttle, Shenzhou 5, into space.
Taiyuan satellite launching center will mainly be used to send solar synchronous satellites and polar orbit space shuttles. So far, Taiyuan satellite launching center has been operating for 40 years. In the past, it used to send only one satellite in a year. Now, it is able to accomplish ten launching tasks every year. Taiyuan satellite launching center has sent 38 domestic and foreign satellites into space successfully.
Built in 1970, Xichang satellite launching center is mainly used for launching geosynchronous satellites. With more than 30 years of development, Xichang satellite launching center has now developed as a center for satellite testing and launching, measuring and directing, telecommunication4, meterological monitoring, as well as logistics support. Xichang satellite lauching center has successfully sent more than 40 satellites into space, which include Asia No.1, Australia satellite, and Fengyun-2. It can also send the five major domestically made carrier rockets, such as Changzheng (Long March) 3A and Changzheng (Long March) 3B. Xichang satellite launching center can send 10-12 satellites in a year. In future, it will also be used as the launching venue5 to send satellites for China's moon probe project during its first and second phase.
Wenchang satellite launching center will be built near the coastal6 area. Thus, all satellite devices can be shipped to the center by sea. The security issue of the launching center will be good, too, since the rockets will mainly fly over the ocean area and all debris7 will eventually fall into the ocean, too.
