Chang'e-1 to be launched by year-end

Chinanews, Beijing, September 17 – Sun Laiyan, deputy director of Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense1, said in an interview given to gov.cn that Chang'e-1, the lunar orbiter made in China, had already been shipped to the launch site, and it would enter the space before 2008.

 

Chang'e-1 will mainly be used to take 3D-pictures of the moon and analyze2 the composition of the lunar soil. It will also investigate the space between earth and moon during its journey before entering the orbit.

 

“The aim of Chang'e-1 is similar to SELENE, the Japanese lunar orbiter launched recently, and the information collected by Chang'e-1 will be available to scientists from all around the world,” said Sun.
