Crested ibis is also called nippon or red crane. It is one of the most endangered species in the world and is listed as a state-level protection animal in China. In the past, a great number of crested ibises lived in China, Japan and Russia. However, as the environment worsened, the number of crested ibises existing in the world declined substantially. In the 1970s, such birds could hardly be seen in the wild. In May 1981, seven crested ibises were discovered in the wild in Yangxian County of Shaanxi. The discovery aroused great concern among scientists worldwide.
Through years, Chinese government has worked hard to protect the endangered species and try to increase the number of the precious bird. The latest information shows that there are now more than 1,000 crested ibises in China, with 500 of them living in the wild, mostly in Yangxian County in southwest Shaanxi, in the border region between Shaanxi and Ningxia, and their neighboring areas.
In order to better protect the animal and enlarge their living scope, in March 2002, the Ministry4 of Forestry decided5 to relocate 30 pairs of crested ibises from Yangxian County in the Shaanxi Provincial Wildlife Protection and Breeding Center in the northern part of the Qinling Mountains. At present, about 260 crested ibises are raised in the breeding center, making the center the largest crested ibises breeding base.
