| Chinanews, Beijing, Aug 17 - At 0:15 Thursday morning, the No.2 generating set of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant, a cooperative project that had aroused the great concern of both Chinese and Russian governments and the peoples of the two countries, was put to commercial operation. As the power plant starts its operation, it will serve as a new energy source in Jiangsu.
Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant is so far the largest technology cooperative project between China and Russia. The first generating set was put to commercial use on May 17. So far, it has worked steadily1 for 91 days. It has helped solve the electricity shortage problem occurring in the summer time in east China region. On August 11-16, the second generating set was put under a test. During the test, the generating set was required to run steadily for 100 consecutive2 hours with full rated power. After the test had proved successful, the second set was formally put into commercial operation. By August 16, the two generating sets at Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant had generated 5.46 billion kilowatt3 hours of electricity in total, with the total amount of electricity on grids4 reaching 4.95 billion kilowatt hours.
