He made the statement while attending a seminar in Shanghai that discussed the issue of setting standards for nuclear power generation. The seminar was organized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
As the chief designer for the Qinshan nuclear power plant, the first nuclear power factory totally designed by Chinese engineers, Ouyang Yu said China had now built 11 nuclear power generating sets. These generating sets adopt various standards from different countries, including those used in the United States, France, Canada, Russia, and Germany. The diversity of standards is the outcome of decisions made at different times. It is very hard to set a unified2 standard for all these generating sets., said Ouyang Yu. Furthermore, it is practically difficult to modify the contents of a certain criterion.
China will need to work out its own standards for the design and production of nuclear equipment. This will serve as a basis if China wants to rely on its own efforts to produce nuclear power on a large scale, said Dai Peikun, vice3 chife engineer at the Shanghai Power Equipment Research Institute (SPERI).
According to the 2005-2020 Nuclear Power Development Program set by the State Council, by 2020, the installed capacity of nuclear power in operation will reach 40 million kilowatts4 in China andtaht of the projects now under construction will reach 18 million kilowatts by then.
