China to set up biosafety system

Chinanews, Tianjin, June 27 – In the next 20 years, China aims to make some breakthrough in setting up a biosafety system and in developing technologies for biological antiterrorism.

 

The statement was made in a report released by the China Biotechnological Development Center under the Ministry1 of Science and Technology in the 2007 International Bio-economy Conference held in Tianjin on Tuesday.

 

In the next 20 years, China will establish an emergency system against bioterrorism and to prevent large contagious2 diseases in order to guarantee people’s health and social stability, the report says.

 

China aims to produce vaccines3 and medicines to prevent factors related with biological terrorism. China will make great breakthroughs in improving its biological detection technologies. It will build up a monitoring network and some standardized5 testing labs. The physical protective technology and equipment installed will reach international advanced level standards.

 

China will also do research o the technologies of monitoring, giving early warning to, and preventing the invasion of intruding6 species. China will build up a batch7 of advanced biosafety labs and standardize4 management procedures. In order to prevent major contagious diseases, China will build up some research bases to prevent bioterrorism. At the same time, improvement will be made in assessing the safety of genetic8 plants and in monitoring the production of these plants. With this effort, it is hoped that the safety of genetic products can be guaranteed.
