An ancient tomb unearthed in Henan

Chinanews, Zhengzhou, June 22 – Archeologists recently discovered a large tomb in Jiyuan City, Henan. The tomb was unearthed1 when a road construction project was under way there. The tomb was believed to be built during the Shang (1600 BC–1100 BC) and Zhou (1100 BC–221 BC) Dynasties. Plenty of fine bronze objects were discovered inside the tomb.

 

The tomb was located in Shaoyuan Village in Jiyuan. Scientists found bronze vessels2, jade3 wares4, porcelain5 wares, and bone tools -- altogether 46 pieces. Some shell coins were also discovered in the tomb.

 

Although the tomb had been robbed several times in the past, plenty of bronze wares were found inside the tomb this time. Most of them were still in a good condition. The jade wares were made with highly graded jade and the patterns on the jade displayed artisans’ fine workmanship. From the combinations of the buried materials, from the sheep bones and chicken bones discovered in the vat6 in the tomb, and from the many weapons unearthed, scientists presume that the owner of the tomb was a male, possibly a high-ranking general in ancient society.
