Soil erosion area taking up 37.1% of China's territory

Chinanews, Nov.14 - According to the recently released 2005 Environmental Report of China by State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), the soil erosion area has amounted to 3.56 million square kilometers, or 37.1% of China's territory, with approximately 5 billion tons of soil loss every year.

 

This has happened more often in mountainous and hilly areas as well as windy and sandy locations, especially upper and middle areas of large rivers. Among all the soil erosion area, 1.65 million square kilometers have been caused by water and 1.91 million by wind.

 

The recently issued National Action Plan for Comfortable Life and Environmental Protection in Rural Areas by SEPA shows that the overall conditions of soil pollution are very serious due to the excessive use of fertilizer, pesticide1, farm-use plastic film and sewage irrigation over a long period. Incomplete survey indicates that polluted cultivated land of the country has taken up about 10 million hectares, over 10% of its kind and mainly in regions with developed economy.
