Chinanews, Kunming, May 26 - According to Zhang Lizhou, an official of Conversation International China Program, and an associate professor of the Institute of Ecology of Beijing Normal University, a very rare live Corbetts tiger (also known as the Indochinese tiger) was found in south Yunnan Province. "Corbetts tigers haven't been seen for several dozen years, and it is a good sign that environmental protection measures in Yuanna have been effective," said Zhang.

 

From a picture taken at 0:00 on May 13, it is clearly an adult female tiger.

 

In the last 10 years, zoologists1 have found many traces indicating the presence of tigers in Yunnan, but none of them have witnessed a real tiger.

 

"The recovery of herbivorous species in Yunnan provides tigers with ample food, and human activity has affected2 the life of animals less and less in the reserve, especially after poaching is generally under control," said Zhang.

 

Corbetts tigers mainly live in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia and south China. It is estimated that there are some 1,200 to 1,700 such tigers in the world at present.
