In most of the sinking areas of the coal deposits in northeast China, many problems have emerged: ground depresses, wall begins to crack, and water pipelines1 are hung in the air. These problems have already affected2 the lives of local residents.
Northeast area is one of China’s important coal production bases and it has made great contribution to the country’s economic construction through the past decades. Many cities there, such as Puxin, Fushun, Shuanyashan and Jixi, are nicknamed the coal cities of China. Coal production in these cities accounts more than one-tenth of the total coal production in China. While these cities have made great contribution to the national economy, they have also paid a heavy ecological3 price. Around these cities, there are large areas of sinking places.
In recent years, Chinese government has taken measures to solve this problem. Zhang Guobao, director of Northeast China Revitalization Office under the State Council, said that as early as 2002, Chinese government had allocated4 3 billion yuan to solve the sinking problem in the 15 key state-owned coal mines in northeast China and the work had achieved fruitful results.
