Chinanews, Nanjing, September 21 – Professor Wang Yongjin from the School of Geographical1 Science of Nanjing Normal University found in a recent research that the Yangtze River Basin might become a new Loess Plateau in the near future.

 

Wang studies global climate changes, but unlike his counterparts who gather information through glaciers2, his study subject is stalagmite, which keeps a more precise record, as it doesn't melt like ice.

 

In his research, Wang found that the severest temperature change in the last 500 thousand years was within 7 to 8 degrees centigrade, and there might be a temperature drop in no more than 200 years, which might bring drought to the Yangtze River Basin, and make it a new Loess Plateau.

 

Climate change like this might even obliterate3 civilizations, thus everyone should take precautions. However, on the other hand, there are also possibilities that climate might get better in the future, but it is still impossible for us to tell which one to come. "After all, weather is sometimes unpredictable," said Wang.
