Online retail¹ in China is worth more than that in the UK and USA combined.

Not only that, it's also growing at a rate of around 20 percent per annum - which is around twice as fast as the latter two countries.

 

That's according to specialist publication Axios, who suggest two key reasons that e-commerce is enjoying such success in China.

 

The first is that Chinese people are significantly more likely to shop on their telephones or tablets than Americans or British people. Apparently², close to three quarters of online transactions in China are made on mobile devices.

 

Secondly³, Chinese people statistically⁴ spend more time online shopping - with Axios suggesting that the average shopper in China will spend 30 minutes a day browsing⁵ products.

 

All of this helps to explain why European and American online firms have been keen to emulate⁶ the success of their Chinese counterparts.

 

For example, late in 2016, Sino.uk reported that a German online retailer⁷, Zalando, had taken inspiration from Chinese firms in its quest to rival Amazon's European fashion business.
