anti-apartheid icon 反种族隔离偶像

Mandela, the country's first black president and anti-apartheid icon¹ known in South Africa by his clan² name of Madiba, emerged from 27 years in apartheid prisons to help guide South Africa through bloodshed and turmoil³ to democracy.

 

南非首位黑人总统和反种族隔离偶像曼德拉在种族隔离监狱里被关了27年之后，领导南非从流血和动乱走向民主。

 

曼德拉是anti-apartheid icon（反种族隔离偶像），也是Nobel Peace laureate（诺贝尔和平奖得主）。南非现任总统祖马表示将给曼德拉举行full state funeral（国葬），并且他还ordered flags to be flown at half mast（下令降半旗）。

 

1960年，曼德拉最先提出对apartheid（种族隔离）进行armed resistance（武装反抗）。因为反对种族隔离，曼德拉曾经被南非的white minority apartheid government（白人少数政府）监禁27年。在被监禁了多年之后，曼德拉在史无前例的all-race elections（跨种族大选）中当选总统。
