US President Barack Obama won re-election to a second term in the White House on Tuesday, beating Republican challenger Mitt¹ Romney after a long and bitter campaign.

 

在漫长而艰苦的选战之后，美国现任总统奥巴马于周二击败共和党候选人罗姆尼，赢得连任。

 

To win re-election就是“赢得连任”，也可以说US President Barack Obama was/got re-elected a second term in the White House。Term指“任期”，美国一届总统的任期为四年，而且任何人不得连任至第三任（ a third full term）。如果之前担任总统或代总统（acting² president）超过两年，则只能当选一次，不得连任。

 

在美国大选期间，媒体多会用Democratic incumbent来指代奥巴马，incumbent这个词的意思是“在任者”；而提到罗姆尼时则用Republican challenger，即向在任者发出挑战的候选人。
