China's first aircraft carrier was delivered and commissioned to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy Tuesday, according to report by National Defense¹ Ministry's official website.

 

据国防部官网报道，中国首艘航空母舰于周二正式交接进入中国人民解放军海军服役。

 

Aircraft carrier就是“航空母舰”，是一种可以实现飞机起降的warship（军舰），其角色相当于一个seagoing airbase（海上空军基地）。有了航母，naval² force（海军）就可以在不依赖当地军事基地的情况下在世界范围内project air power（部署空中力量）。航空母舰分为fixed wing aircraft（固定翼航空母舰）和 rotary-wing aircraft（直升机航空母舰），以搭载不同起飞方式的飞机。

 

Commission在这里指“使服役”，多用be commissioned to来表示，如：The aircraft carrier was commissioned to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy. （航母进入中国人民解放军海军服役。）另外，这个词也可以表示“委托、委任”之意，如：The President commissioned the Prime Minister to pay a visit to the teacher’s house.（总统委托总理去那位老师家里看望他。）
