Big cities in China are on the brink¹ of a major shortfall in resources and infrastructure² capacity, under a problem termed "urban diseases," a new report has warned.

 

一项最新报道警告，中国大城市正濒临严重的资源短缺、基础设施承载能力不足等一系列城市问题，这些问题被统称为“城市病”。

 

文中的urban diseases就是指“城市病”，是指人口过于向大城市集中而引起的一系列社会问题，表现在：urban planning（城市规划）和建设盲目向周边摊大饼式的扩延，大量耕地被占，使人地矛盾更尖锐。发展中国家的urbanization（城市化）问题也称为城市病。

 

城市病是urban development（城市发展）过程中的必然现象，在城市化中期阶段尤其严重。其背后隐藏着urban size（城市规模）膨胀、经济社会发展的深层次矛盾。“城市病”的根源在于城市资源与社会需求在一定阶段产生巨大矛盾，致使城市承载力“过载”及城市各要素之间关系失调而表现出的各种负面效应。归根结底，城市病的出现就是imbalances between rapidly swelling³ populations and scarce urban resources（快速膨胀的人口与城市资源不协调）的问题。

 

未来一段时期，将是我国各大城市的concentrated outbreak of urban diseases（城市病集中爆发期），城市病将成为影响城市和谐稳定的key hidden danger（关键隐患），加强urban governance（城市治理）刻不容缓。
