And while many may not have got away with it, Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy carried off the outfit¹, which she teamed with Christian² Louboutin heels, with grace.

The dinner was held in honour of Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian President, and his wife Svetlana, who have been on a three-day visit to France.

President Sarkozy praised his Russian counterpart's stance（位置，立场） on the sensitive issue of human rights, capping two days of intense diplomatic activity.

Mr Sarkozy told Mr Medvedev: "Your attachment³ to the state of law... judicial⁴ security and defence of human rights eases the relations between our two countries."

This marks a thawing⁵（融化） of the French president's stance against Russia.

During his 2007 election campaign, several months before he met Ms Bruni, Mr Sarkozy criticised the Russian army's actions in Chechnya（车臣） , where it has been accused of violations⁶, and slammed his predecessor⁷（前任，前辈） Jacques Chirac's cordial（兴奋的，热忱的） ties with Russia's then-president Vladimir Putin.
