On entering the gym room, one will see some shining steel poles placed there. Some students, in their 20s or 30s, are learning movements with their coach and dancing to jazz music. Some students wear boots, short shirts and trousers, while others simply wear T-shirts and blue jeans. They all look confident. Contrary to what people think that pole dance is a kind of sexual dance, students in the gym room wear common clothes. Even the coach doesn't wear any make-up. The dance movements are helpful for people to keep a good figure. Without all those steel poles, the gym room would look exactly the same as other fitness centers.
Most of the people registering for the dance are young, female white collars, who choose the pole dance in order to keep fit and make themselves look more charming, said Luo Lan, the coach.
She said that pole dance is very popular in Europe, and in many countries there are pole dance clubs set up for people who want to keep a good figure. In Britain, a portable steel pole has even been designed so that people can carry it with ease. Luo Lan opened her own pole dance training course in July, last year, which was the first course of such kind in China.
Pole dance is actually a kind of aerobic1 exercises designed to help improve coordination2 inside the body. It can help office workers alleviate3 work pressure, become more confident and improve their sense of rhythm, said an expert who has studied fitness exercises for many years.
