Secretary的多种用法

"I chose the tall secretary where Mother sat so often writing letters by a sunny window."

译这句话时要格外小心，否则就会把tall secretary译成了高个子秘书，岂不闹出笑话？其实“secretary”在这里是一种书写的桌子，一般上面还附有一个小书架，所以全话的意思是：我选择了那个高大的写字桌，过去每逢阳光明媚的日子，妈妈常坐在窗前的桌旁写信。

“Secretary”的意思还是蛮多的，除了常见的“秘书”之外，它还是“书记”，如“省委书记”是Secretary of a provincial¹ Party Committee. “书记处”是secretariat,它是secretary的变体。秘书长，是secretary general，如联合国秘书长是the Secretary General of the United Nations."

可还有许多职务从中文字面看并没有“秘书”字样，但英语仍需用Secretary，如美国国务卿(the Secretary of State)、财政部长（the Secretary of Treasury）、教育部长（the Secretary of Education）、国防部长（the Secretary of Defense²）等。
