China makes a new scheme on public holidays

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 9 – The State Development and Reform Commission1 on Friday publicized a new scheme on Chinese public holidays. The new scheme was posted on SDRC's official website to seek public's opinions. According to this new scheme, when a public holiday arrives, the two weekend days on which the public holiday falls can be moved either immediately before or immediately after the holiday so that people will have three days off at a stretch. When this method is adopted, Chinese people can have two golden weeks that have seven days off each and five weeks that contain three days off each.

 

If the new scheme is adopted, there will be eleven legal public holidays in China in a year, instead of ten at present, and thus Chinese people will have one more day off.

 

The new scheme includes three traditional Chinese festivals as public holidays. The three traditional festivals are Qingming Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-autumn Festival. Thus, the public holidays will contain more traditional cultural features. In addition, the Spring Festival holiday period will start from the Lunar New Year's Eve. This is to make sure that Chinese people will have plenty of time to make preparations for the family reunion. (Currently, most Chinese people need to work on Lunar New Year’s Eve.)

 

If the new scheme is adopted, Chinese people will have two golden weeks each containing seven off days (the two golden weeks will fall on the Spring Festival period and the National Day period) and five weeks with three off days when there is the New Year's Day, the Qingming Festival, the Labour Day, the Dragon Boat Festival and the Mid-autumn Festival. The holidays distribution will become more rational2 as there will be both long and short holiday periods. In future, more Chinese people will have paid holidays. The new holiday scheme will give people more choices to make their holiday plans and thus it will greatly alleviate3 the pressure that transportation departments, security bodies, shopping malls and other related departments experience during the current holiday boom4.

 

In future, the state will issue a regulation concerning Chinese workers' paid holidays. With these measures, it is expected that Chinese people will have more days off.
