76-year-old man climbs to base camp of Mt. Qomolangma

Chinanews, Shanghai, Nov. 1 – “I have realized my dream!” A 76-year-old man exclaimed1 with excitement on Monday when he finally got a stamp seal made from the alpinist base camp of Mt. Momolangma. In twelve years, the old man, Wang Haicheng, has made it to the alpinist base camp of Mt. Qomolangma twice, the Chongqing Times reported.

 

Wang lives in the Shiyou Road in Chongqing's Yuzhong District. In 1981, he retired2 from the Shaqu Automobile3 Repairing Factory.

 

In 1995, ignoring opposition4 from his family, Wang started a journey around China with a bike. In October, 2007, he and several young men traveled more than 1,000 kilometers from Lhasa to the Mt. Qomolangma base camp in a jeep.

 

“We spent five days for the whole journey,” Wang said.

 

When they were 6 kilometers away from the base camp, they had to get off their jeep and started to walk. Wang carried the entire luggage on his back and walked for two hours to reach the camp, which was 5,000 meters above sea level. Five years previously5, he reached the camp by traveling on his own.

 

“My biggest wish (for this journey) was that I could get a stamp seal from the base camp,” Wang said.

 

In 1995, Wang started to travel across the whole country on foot, by bike, by train or by bus. In his twelve years’ journey, he managed to draw a state map that bore different stamp seals made in different places. On his map, one can see that there are more than 40,000 stamp seals made with 160 different patterns. 3,000 of them are considered as special stamp seals. In finishing the work, Wang has traveled for more than 1.2 million kilometers.
