Chinanews, Chongqing, October 31 – According to the latest statistics from the Chongqing Municipal Marriage and Adoption1 Registration2 Center, the number of divorces in the city has been increasing by 10,000 annually3 since 2003, when the new regulation on marriage registration became effective.

 

In the first 3 quarters of 2007 alone, nearly 60,000 couples in Chongqing divorced. Most of them divorced because they did not love each other anymore, including many elderly couples. The divorce rate among young couples born in the 1980s is also very high, as some of them got married in a rush. However, a large number of them restored the marriage not long after.

 

The simplification of procedures has made it much easier to divorce, but the true reason for the rise of divorce rate is that Chinese appreciate the quality of marriage more than they did. They will not endure a marriage without love today. By the way, most young people have a too high expectation of post-marital4 life, thus it is natural for some of them to choose divorce when they disappointedly find that their marital life isn’t that rosy5.
