Chinese students should make further improvement to raise the level of their doctoral theses, Li said.
Li got his doctoral degree in Germany. He has served as chairman of International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing for eight years. He often attends international seminars. The doctoral theses presented by four of his students have won national awards, the Chutian Metropolis1 Daily reported.
“When comparing doctoral theses presented by foreign and Chinese students, I feel that Chinese students' scientific research lacks depth and width. Professor Green from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich also said to me many times that in China, much of the scientific research is not deep enough,” Li said.
Some students jump to conclusions with only one or two experiments. Their scientific findings can not stand close scrutiny2. If they don't improve the depth of their researches, they will not be recognized as first-class scientists in the international scientific circle. As for the width, what I mean is that students should have deep knowledge in one field and also have some basic understanding in many other fields. They should be able to do scientific researches across different fields, Li noted3.
“Of course, I only refer to the general situation. In many specific cases, many Chinese students can workout excellent doctoral theses,” he conculded.
