Chinanews, Beijing, September 17 – According to a report by the People's Daily, more than 40% of Chinese netizens spend their weekends surfing the Internet, and at least 70% of them have psychological problems that can be categorized as the Internet syndrome1. The information was disclosed in the recently published White Book on the Health Conditions of Chinese Netizens
The Internet syndrome refers to a series of physical and mental problems caused by using the computer for too long time, including wrist pain, eye fatigue2, cervical strain and depression. It often leads to sub-health conditions. According to the white book, more than 73% of the respondents say they feel dizzy and pain in their joints3. Quite a lot of them also have sleep disorders4 like insomnia5. Some 30% of them suffer from hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases. Nearly half of them complain about stomach pain. What's more, most of the netizens don't pay enough attention to health issues, as most of them never take regular physical checks, and 63% of them will go to buy themselves medicines at pharmacies6 instead of consult doctors at hospitals when they fall ill. Mental problems of Chinese netizens are even worse. 20% of the respondents believe they have psychological problems, and 70% of them are very forgetful, anxious or depressed7. The survey also shows that most of the netizens don't take mental problems seriously, as 70% of them have never attended any psychological training sessions, and 90% have never consulted any psychological doctors.
