China's GDP might keep a 7% growth for next 20 yrs, Mundell

Chinanews, Beijing, Sept 14 – For the next two decades, China's GDP will sustain a 7% annual growth rate easily. However, as consumption increases, more and more Chinese people will buy cars and this will cause environmental pollution in cities, said Nobel Prize winner Robert A. Mundell on Wednesday.

 

When we calculate GDP growth, we should not overlook the negative consequences to GDP brought by natural resources depletion1, the economist2 said while attending the Nobel Prize Forum3 in Beijing.

 

He hoped that China could further reduce its population size and prevent the environment from becoming worse.

 

He said that at present, even if economy grew fast, people got less in return. Although people's income has increased, natural resources have become depleted4. Such problems will continue to exist even if population expansion process can be curbed5, he said. The water and air are being polluted. People release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, causing global warming and soil erosion problems. Farm land has been changed for industrial use and chemicals are polluting land resources, Mundell warned.
