According to information from the China Hygiene1 Association, in China suicide has become the No. 5 killer2, and is the biggest killer among people aged3 between 15 and 34.
“In China, at least 250,000 people die of suicide every year and one million people attempt to commit suicide. The suicide cases have brought great impacts on the families and society as a whole,” said Liu Pengzhi, who is also president of the Renmin University of China's affiliated4 middle school.
Although many reasons might cause the young people's death, in essence, the root cause is that many young people do not have a correct life value, Liu said.
Through investigation5, Liu learns that in developed countries, 90% of the suicides suffer from some mental illness. In China, however, mental illness contributes to only a small proportion of the suicide incidence. In many cases, adolescents kill themselves because they do not value their lives. They are indifferent to life mainly because of the lack of life education.
In light of this, Liu suggested that secondary schools in Beijing should offer life education course. Life education should be provided together with moral, physical and intellectual education lessons, lessons about puberty and safety. Schools, families and community centers should work together to establish a system about life education and share information about life education. In addition, teachers should also receive more training course on this topic.
