“In fact, there are Buddhism colleges in all the famous Buddhist mountains in China. All of them were built in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when most temples in China needed new blood,” said Hang Jianggen, vice3 general secretary of Wutai Mountain Buddhist Association.
The foundation of the Putuo Buddhism College was initiated4 in 1980, when Miaoshan, the chief of Putuo Mountain Buddhism Association, thought it was his major responsibility to educate young monks5 and nuns6 in Buddhist classics. But not until 1988, was the college opened.
Jiuhua Mountain Buddhist Association launched a training school in 1985, and it was upgraded to the Jiuhua Mountain Buddhist College in 1990. At that time, it was open to all the monks and nuns in Anhui Province.
Sichuan Emei Mountain Buddhist College was previously7 the Sichuan Buddhism College. In 2003, it amalgamated8 with the Emei Moutain Buddhist College to take the current name.
“Buddhism enjoys a free and open policy in China, which has offered it opportunities for sound development,” said Han. Nowadays, there are more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, 34 Buddhist colleges and 200,000-plus monks and nuns, not to mention that nearly 100 million Chinese who believe in the religion.
