Chinanews, Beijing, August 24 – Cats, the classic Broadway musical, will be introduced to Guangzhou next January for the first time ever.

 

There will be eight performances at the Tianhe Stadium on January 5 – 10. After that, the troupe1 will visit Shenzhen and Dongguan.

 

When asked why it is Cats first, but not other classics like The Phantom2 of the Opera or Miss Saigon that will be brought on stage in Guangzhou, Kuang, the program manager of the Xinghai Art Performance Co. Ltd, the contractor3 of the play, said that Chinese audience were more familiar with Cats than the other classics, and it had made several hits in previous tours in China. Besides, Cats only require simple and economical settings.

 

Cats made its debut4 in London in 1981. Since then, it has conquered uncountable audiences from all around the world with its unique charm. In 1983, it won 7 Tony Awards including the Best Musical.

 

Cats first came to China in 2003, and it was a major box office winner in both Beijing and Shanghai that year.

 

The cast of Cats this time will be from Australia. The audience won’t need to worry about their performance, for they are among the best musical actors and actresses in the world.
