Pu'er tea makes Yunnan black tea unpopular

Chinanews, Kunming, Aug. 23 – Wang Jixiang, a local tea seller in Yunnan revealed that Yunnan black tea had become less popular because more Pu’er tea is much sought after in the markets. He said that export of Yunnan black tea has ceased for two years.

 

Wang said that Yunnan black tea was popular in world market after it was first made in 1939. In that year, some 15 tons of such tea were exported to Britain. In 1986, the local government presented such tea to Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ as a gift. In the past 40 years, Yunnan black tea is considered as the most valuable tea by the State Council, China’s cabinet. Such tea had been exported to many countries in Western Europe and North America, its export volume once amounting to 8,000 tons annually1.

 

In the past, 80% of Yunnan tea were black tea, while currently local people are keen on producing more Pu’er tea. Zuo Jiaju, an official from Yunnan Tea Production Association revealed that because of increasing tea price, producing black tea had to cost more, and foreign merchants were reluctant to buy black tea. He said that black tea had no advantages in world market.
