Chinanews, Wuhan, Aug. 1 – The city planning commission in Jingzhou recently approved a proposal of relocating some of the city residents living in the old town to other places in order to protect the old city area. According to the plan, at least 50,000 residents will be moved from the old city that covers an area of 4.54 square kilometers. After the relocation, only 55,000 people will stay in the old downtown area, the Chutian Metro1 Daily reported.

 

The old town in Jingzhou is regarded as the best-preserved and the largest old city in south China region. It is dubbed2 “a valuable jade3 in south China.”Abundant cultural relics4 scatter5 in every part of the old city area. While the old city is considered as the most distinguished6 part for its historical and cultural preservation7, it meets constant challenges as to how to protect this part appropriately during the city's urbanization process.

 

One way to solve this problem is to relocate the residents in the old town to some other places, which will also be one of the most challenging tasks. At present, the old city positions itself as a political and educational city, while its function as a cultural and tourist city is largely neglected.

 

With the residents relocation plan, local government will move, step by step, some the government public institutions and city residents out of the old town.
