Chinanews,Beijing, June 12 - On June 9, Beijing sent 12,000 volunteers to the suburbs, especially the mountainous regions, to investigate whether there are poppy fields. There will be 4 or 5 investigations1 like this in the future. The volunteers are responsible for reporting the location of poppy fields to police as soon as they find them.

 

"In fact, we sent some volunteers to Beijing suburbs in late May, and they have found poppy fields in Pinggu District," said Zhao Wenzhong, the director of the Anti-Drugs Department of Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.

 

Some farmers in Beijing have the habit of keeping poppies. They like to watch poppy flowers, and some of them use poppies as medical herbs, even as vegetables. However, none of them grow poppies for making drugs.

 

According to China's law, anyone who keeps more than 500 poppies at a time will be criminally prosecuted2.
