China should protect historical cities from modernity

Chinanews, Beijing, June 13 - "Many strong cultures are like bulldozers razing1 the culture of developing countries in the process of globalization, and there are too many 'similar' towns in such countries. China must work hard to preserve its unique culture from over-emphasis on modernity, especially in the characteristics of small but historical towns," said Qiu Baoxing, Vice2 Minister of Construction, on June 11, at the 2nd International Forum3 of Urban Planning and International Seminar of Urban Culture.

 

China has selected 108 state-level historical cities since 1982. 157 towns and villages have also been put on a special list due to their deep historical and cultural backgrounds. The precious historical and cultural heritages in such cities, towns and villages are absolutely not reproducible, and deserve careful protection.

 

It is a most difficult task to protect historical cities, as it requires advance technology and careful urban planning. Besides, there is no specific law on their protection. Some of the historical cities in China have already been damaged beyond recognition.

 

"Ancient buildings in historical cities, towns and villages must be well protected, and new buildings there must follow the traditional style. Modern buildings in such places should be renovated4 so as to be compatible with the cultural atmosphere there," said Qiu.
