June 4 - Chinese students will need to dance everyday at school from September and seven group dances, such as the waltz, have already been selected for this daily compulsory1 activity.
Beijing Morning Post reported that China's Ministry2 of Education have composed a series of dances that are thought to be suitable for students, including three for primary pupils, two for middle students, and three for high school youths. Students in high school can expect to dance the waltz hand in hand. Every dance will take four to five minutes. Several educational experts spent two years choosing the dances while considering the physiological3 and mental characteristics of students of different ages. The report said, the dancing lessons will be arranged in students' spare time and as part of their sports education after school thus it will not replace the traditional break setting-up exercises between classes. The ministry will first train dancing teachers and distribute discs that contain training contents to schools in June. The nationwide group dancing scheme will then be formally launched in September. The report said schools can choose one dance or several dances for the youngsters according to the time and resources available. According to a source in the education department, group dance will provide more chances for students to exercise as well as fostering the youths' aesthetic4 perspective. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education will continue organizing experts to compose new dances for students and hope to update the dances every two years. About a month ago, a sports hour campaign was launched throughout the country that required students to have a sports period everyday as the education authorities continue to try to encourage students to get more involved in exercise. The exercise amongst minors5 campaign also drew the attention of state leaders. President Hu Jintao urged for an increase in exercise amongst youngsters at a conference on April 23.
