Chinanews, Guangzhou, May 30 – A group of farmers recently have emerged1 in Deqing County2, Guangdong, who hold a lot of cultural leisure3 activities at home to entertain their fellow villagers. Dozens of, sometimes even a hundred, villagers flock4 to these farmers' houses to watch folk dramas or films or read books.

 

At eight o'clock in the evening, Li Zhiqiang's home is filled with people who come to read books or newspapers. The books and newspapers are spread on the ten desks in his reading room. Other villagers gather at the activity rooms to play chess, watch digital films or local drama performances. The house suddenly becomes a bustling5 area.

 

Li Zhiqiang and his wife are busy brewing6 tea for the visitors, at the same time making sure that everything is ok.

 

“Since we became the largest cultural family in the village, our homes are always crowded with people when night falls. Villagers come here to read books, play chess, watch films or play sports games. It is our pleasure to provide a place where our fellow villagers can have some entertainment activities here while learning7 some knowledge,” the couple said.

 

Li Zhiqiang became rich by growing oranges. Last year, he built a four-storey house as his home. The house covers more than 600 square meters. However, he was not satisfied with the farming life, so he bought some video machines, stereo8 sets, and musical instruments. During the spare time, he often watched films and sang karaoke at home. Gradually, more and more villagers came to his house to join him.

 

Later, Li established an open reading room at the courtyard. He bought some books for people to read. As more and more people came to his house, the reading room became larger and larger. In the end, he and his fellow villagers also managed to establish a table tennis room, a snooker room, a chess room, and a basketball court.

 

Li's house has become a large cultural entertainment center in his village. Now, the “cultural center” has more than 1,500 books, over ten kinds of periodicals9, and some sports equipment. All these things are open to villagers free of charge.

 

Under local government's support, nine farmers in Deqing County have turned their homes into such cultural centers. More and more farmers have also set up their own reading rooms, although these rooms might be small compared with Li's. In future, the local government plans to turn at least one farmer house into a reading center in the county so that more and more villagers can easily get information by reading books. In this way, local government hopes that the villagers will finally become educated, modern farmers.
