High school & college enrollment rate in China too low

Chinanews, Beijing, May 18 - According to Chen Zhili, a State Councilor and former Minister of Education, enrollment1 rate of high schools and colleges in China is much lower than the figure in developed countries. There might even be a "30-year gap" between China and developed countries in this aspect, she said.

 

Backward education has become China's bottleneck2 in its effort to make the most of its rich human resource. Although Chinese take up 21% of the world's total population and China's educated population also take up 26% of the world's total, education situation as a whole in China is not very satisfactory, which is partly the reason for uncompetitive Chinese labor3 force in the global market.

 

Chen suggests that China should invest much more on education, to make the burden of huge population a booster to its economy. Besides, with improved education, China will have better innovative4 industries, which is necessary to building a harmonious5 society, for they are the key to the solution of the problems in industrialization.
