Genghis Khan died in 1227, and the ritual has since been held uninterrupted for 780 years.
Since no one knows where Genghis Khan was buried, people have put up eight white yurts, in which the memorial tablet and relics3 of Genghis Khan were put to represent him. Usually, the yurts are called "the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan".
The obligation of the mausoleum keepers was passed on from generation to generation in selected Darhad families, Sidi, the current one, being of the 39th generation, when he took up the responsibility in April, 2004.
"There are more than 10 rituals of various scales every year to commemorate Genghis Khan," said the manager of the Mausoleum as a tourist resort.
"500 families were selected to protect the Mausoleum of the Khan in the Qing Dynasty, including mine. Now we have developed into a village of 2,000 households, though very few of us are qualified4 to inherit the obligation, as the form and procedures of most rituals remain secret, " said Sidi.
