Chinanews, Beijing, Apr. 23 – By April 18, the total number of shareholders1 in Chinese securities markets exceeded the 90-million mark to reach 90.21 million, the Shanghai Securities Journal reported.
On April 18, the number of newly registered shareholders in Shanghai and Shenzhen stock markets hit a new high of 344,600, with 275,200 being A-share stockholders, according to information from the China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation Limited. Information shows that among the 90.21 million shareholders by April 18, 89.79 million were individuals and 417,900 were institutions. Newly registered shareholders have soared in number this year, just like the soaring stock indexes. By April 18, new stockholders who just opened an account this year reached 11.67 million, more than twice the total number of new stockholders in 2006, when about 5.18 million people opened an account. With more stockholders entering the booming market, trading volume hit new highs almost everyday in the Shanghai and Shenzhen securities markets. As new entering funds push up the trading volume, analysts2 say it becomes a priority task to make investors3 become aware of the potential risks involved in stock markets.
