China's Zhang Yining returns the ball during a group match against Japan's Fukuhara Ai at 2006 Women's Table Tennis World Cup held in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Automous Region, Friday, Sept. 29, 2006. Zhang won the match 4-0. |
Sept. 30 - China's world No. 1 Zhang Yining crushed a Japanese Olympic prospect1 and a former Chinese world champion who had switched her allegiance, qualifying2 for the women's World Cup quarter-finals on Friday.
Zhang, winner in 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005, handed a straight-set defeat to doll-faced Japanese Ai Fukuhara, who is ranked 14th in the world and being groomed3 for the 2008 Olympic Games. Zhang didn't give much chance to the 17-year-old, winning 11-8, 11-7 11-6, 11-3 in her first group match. Fukuhara, who imitates the fast-attacking style of legendary4 Chinese Deng Yaping, said after the game that she wasn't upset by the defeat because Zhang is in a class of her own. Chinese head coach Shi Zhihao said that Zhang sees Fukuhara as a serious threat in the 2008 Olympics, therefore, "she took this game very seriously." "Zhang hadn't played against Fukuhara since 2004 and she really wanted to know if Fukuhara had became a better player," added the 47-year-old coach. Four hours after disposing of the Japanese, Zhang shook off a strong challenge by U.S. player Gao Jun, winning in six sets. Gao, 37, who helped China win a world team title in 1991 and became a U.S. citizen in 1997, held the 21-year-old Zhang to two-all before losing 8-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-13, 11-5, 11-3. Chinese Guo Yan, ranked third, joined Zhang in the final eight after beating Belarus' defensive5 player Viktoria Pavlovich 4-0 and Lin Ling of Chinese Hong Kong 4-1. Lin Ling's teammate Tie Yana, world No. 4, also qualified6 for the quarter-finals, with straight-sets wins over Nicole Struse of Germany and Singapore's Li Jia Wei. The World Cup features six continental7 champions and 10 world top-ranked players. The largest ranking difference is between Zhang Yining and Egypt's African champion Bacent Osman, rated 375th. Osman, who covers from head to toe, suffered two straight-set losses to Gao Jun and Fukuhara, each game lasting8 less than 15 minutes. Chinese is the most convenient language of communication in the World Cup, which featured three Chinese national team members and seven former Chinese players. Besides Gao Jun, Li Jia Wei, Tie Yana and Lin Ling, New Zealand's Oceania champion Karen Li, European champion Liu Jia of Austria and Wang Chen of the United States were also born and trained in China. Five World Cup participants were born in Beijing. Fukuhara, who learned the sport in China since she could barely9 hold the racket, speaks impeccable Chinese. To amuse Chinese people, she sometimes adds a northeastern Chinese accent that she acquired while playing for Liaoning club. The World Cup, which ends on Sunday, offers a total prize of 135,000 U.S. dollars, among which, 44,000 US dollars will go to champion, 22,000 to runner-up and 15,000 to third place finisher.
