Pig race to wish for an abundant year

Chinanews, Guangzhou, Mar1. 27 – A great local traditional festival, the pig race, is held in Shantou, Guangdong Province once for 12 years, to express people’s well wishes for achieving an abundant year. In the rural areas of Shantou, the event is a grand ceremony.

 

The festival is usually held in the front of the ancestral temple with nearly 100 pigs participating in the race. The whole village is enveloped2 in happy atmosphere, as many local people living abroad also come back to take part in the event.

 

Villagers are expected to dress up their pigs, in their wish for a bumper3 harvest in the year. “We hold the race also in order to know which family can raise best pigs,” said one villager.

 

It is reported that in this year of the pig weighed about at least 200-300 kilos, and the heaviest one was more than 300 kilos.

 

Every yearafter the race, villagers will slaughter4 these pigs and eat the pork together with their friends.
